Nene Valley 2006Well, I enjoyed it Sorry if I got stressed at any time and seemed a bit sharp. Looking back that may have seemed the case.
That was the first time we have deployed a mortar and it worked well. T'was a bit of an improvised last minute set-up and I hope to improve the thing in the future. It would be good to get the rounds bursting in and around the enemy. That can be done but needs trusted re-enactors to be safe. I was impressed with the Leicesters but obviously didn't know them before that events so wouldn't make that call.
Shame about the radio mix-up on Sunday but we all learned a lesson from that!

Nene Valley was massively dissapointing, the 39-45 society did well enough but I felt the show did not offer much to the MOPS. Also, GD recon buggered off on the Saturday! What gives?
Wont visit next year unless they have a few more groups booked and at different stations.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there me old fruit. We decided to patrol the station after the battle, and see if there was any action, and a chance to do a bit of the usual Railway event stuff.
We outnumbered the public, and we certainly outnumbered the re-enactors.
With a bit more thought and structure to it, it'd be a good event and venue has great potential, but i'm afraid it was a waste of £25 petrol money.
Neil.

S'what I thought, worst part of it was the reenactors packed up and buggered off at 3:45pm! There were more MOPS around too, some of which wanted to look at or talk to other folks.
So, why did GD recon vanish on the Saturday night? Was it really that bad?

I was at Nene Valley on Saturday and it was very thin on the ground as far as MOPs were concerned. The venue is pleasant enough and there are some really nice trains there, it really needs alot more input from re-enactors though. There was only anything going on at the Wansford station. The others were totally devoid of any activity.
Its a shame, but this event could be built upon and developed as there is scope to have themed stations, entertainment, etc. However, I did have a really lovely day catching up with a few old friends and meeting some new ones, so the day wasn't a complete waste for me. Great to see you Emma, Richard, Les, Mark, Andy and the SBG guys, etc!

I remember a year or two ago enquiring about this event to be told "It's a small event and we want to keep it that way" This was from a re-enactor involved in the show who I beleieve no longer has any input. In essence I/we were told we weren't wanted.
So when I saw GD had managed an invite I was surprised to say the least. It's sad when an event is not well attended by the MOPs and the reasons can be varied. Usually it's management who don't publicise it beforehand. But re-enactors should stick with it as it is us who ultimately build shows up.
It would be good if someone could post a proper balanced write up of Nene Valley and even suggest what went wrong and what could be done to improve it.

Paul, I think you hit the nail on the head with referring to advertising. I spoke to a couple of re-enactors who said it hadn't hardly been advertised at all.
I definitely think that with more input from re-enactors and better (or any) publicity, it could be a really good event. Sorry, not much good at quality write ups. Will leave that to someone else! It has such good access to the A1 (right next to it), that it is an easy one for most people to get to.

I attended on the Saturday and I aggree that it could be so much better and therefore more profitable for the organisers. The trouble with Railway people is they don't see the opertunities thta re-enactment offers.
Oh well....

I attend again only on Saturday, but as a MoP with my kids…
The location as other have said is good as access from the A1 is easy…
Just walking around it would appear there is more scope, use of the bridge over the river with Sentries on etc… but what we don’t know is the limitations put upon the re-enactors by the organisers, if they say you can only go in X n Y then you are limited…
it is very easy to criticise and difficult to organise…
nothing negative meant by my comments, just a my limited observations...

With the right people organisation is not hard. When the right people are told they are not needed this is the result.

I agree entirely with Paul on this one, the WW2 Forces Network (John Hartshore's "Mob" as we call ourselves) offered an invite with the 352nd and John's boys turning up either in Para gear or as FJ14. (I think)
We received absolutely nothing from either the railway or the 39-45 society. From my own point of view it seems the society may be trying to keep too much of a hold on what could, in essence, be a fantastic show with a huge amount of potential at each station.
For one of the Premier Railways in the country it is genuinely dissapointing to see this weekend essentially go to waste, with Wansford being the only "themed" station on the entire line, each station had a nice bit of potential at each, even if it would have been just a few folks. Its needs better organizing, definately.
The battle was mildly entertaining, if a bit random though

Thanks to all for a fantastic introductory weekend to the 85th. Both Rick and I thoroughly enjoyed everything, and meeting all of you. We can't wait for next season. We learnt so much including why Denison smocks are so expensive..... being bullet proof!

You wait till you battle against Americans!!
Glad you enjoyed it, I did. Judging from the feedback on the panzergrenadier.net some didn't think so. The event seems to be growing each year. It started with the railway wanting a small presence and has grown. Depends what we want, we could get the Nene Valley to promote it more. there was another 40s event in Peterboghorror that weekend also. MOPs were very scant. The reason the display wasn't up to much was due to the fact that when most people arrived on Friday night it was pissing it down and folk threw up tents anywhere. This should have been sorted early Saturday but unfortunately wasn't.

More feedback This time from a more friendly forum
"Thanks to the organisers of this fantastic event near Peterborough last weekend.
We had a good weekend displaying to the public and the battle that was organised was the best public battle I have taken part in in the past 3 years. The field was great and the pyro looked great from where our section was.
The crowds weren't huge due to the rubbish weather, but it was great riding the trains up and down the line and hopefully next year this show will continue to grow.

Due to steelwork ordered by the railway we had half the space for displaying with twice as many re-enactors. The railway for some reason, do not advertise this event as much as we all would like even in its third year. We all would like this event to grow so some of the comments put on other forums will be looked into , to improve next years show.

from another forum. | Hi, my name's bart and i was one of the first people to approach Nene Valley with the concept of holdinga second world war event there. We were informed that another group of people had approached them saying give us £20000 to run this event and we will make you twice as much. Now this as maybe, but this is a small railway that cannot aford to pay out that kind of money plus this is only their 3rd show, so they are on a learning curve, YES they do admit they were worried about not enough publicity, and this is going to be greatly addressed in the site meeting in jan - feb 07, this year we are hoping to have at least 40allied and 40 axis re-enactors.
Please remember gents it is very, very easy for all of us to be touchline managers, as for paul you are always welcome, but nobody has ever said you had contacted them, your experience is always welcome, so contact myself on this website, or Chris and let us know, Show date for this year is last weekend in september.
For those re-enactors who have said they felt let down and had wasted £25 petrol money, and that they will not be attending again, i am truly sorry, but as already been said this show has great potential, and it would be a shame if you missed out. May i wish all members of the 39-45 a HAPPY NEW YEAR Bart.
